Completeness and provenance

Do box and papers affect watch value?

Box and papers can support value, but there is no universal percentage. Their importance depends on the watch’s age, rarity, brand, reference and whether the documents actually belong to that watch.

What ‘full set’ normally means

The phrase is used loosely. At minimum, sellers usually mean the watch, its original presentation box and matching warranty paper or card. A genuinely complete set may also include the outer box, manuals, tags, bezel protector, spare links, additional straps, tools and purchase receipt.

List exactly what you have rather than simply writing ‘full set’. A buyer can then assess the complete package without assumptions.

  • Inner and outer boxes
  • Matching warranty card or certificate
  • Booklets and product literature
  • Spare links, straps and tools
  • Service paperwork and receipts

Why matching papers can matter

Warranty documents can help confirm the reference, sale date and provenance. On some collectible watches, correct period documents meaningfully increase desirability. On more common modern pieces, the effect may be smaller but can still improve confidence and resaleability.

Papers do not prove that every component is authentic or original. The watch itself still requires inspection and authentication.

Can you sell a watch without them?

Yes. Lost Watches considers watch-only submissions across approved brands. The buyer may ask for identification, proof of ownership or additional history, and the offer can reflect the missing accessories and additional verification required.

Do not purchase random boxes or papers before requesting a valuation. They may not improve the offer enough to justify the cost and can create confusion if they do not match the reference.

How to submit a watch-only piece

Photograph all sides of the watch, the clasp and any visible reference details. Explain how the watch came into your possession, mention known service history and list every item that will accompany it. A clear, accurate submission is more useful than trying to make the set appear more complete.
