Case and provenance

Does engraving affect a watch’s value?

An engraving changes the physical watch, but its effect is not always negative. The wording, placement, execution, history and rarity of the underlying reference all matter.

Personal and presentation engravings

Names, dates, initials, company awards and commemorative messages are common. A generic modern inscription may narrow demand because the next owner cannot relate to it.

A documented presentation with genuine historical significance may instead support provenance. The story requires evidence rather than assumption.

Location and depth change the impact

A shallow caseback inscription is different from deep work across a case flank or bracelet. Engraving can remove material, cross original finishes or make later restoration difficult.

Clear straight-on and angled photographs help show depth, placement and whether the surrounding surface has already been polished.

Why removal can cause more damage

Removing an engraving usually means taking away additional metal. That can thin a caseback, soften edges, distort hallmarks or leave an uneven surface.

Laser filling and refinishing may also be detectable and should be disclosed. Do not authorize removal simply to prepare the watch for sale.

How it enters the offer

The buyer balances reference desirability, case condition, material, provenance and the likely preference of a future owner. There is no universal percentage deduction.

Submit the inscription and any supporting documents together. An as-is assessment protects the option to preserve meaningful history.
