What polishing actually does
Abrasive refinishing removes a small layer of metal to reduce scratches and recreate brushed or polished surfaces. It cannot erase damage without changing the surrounding geometry.
Repeated work can soften bevels, thin lugs, round crown guards and reduce the definition of engravings or hallmarks.
Original finish is reference-specific
Different surfaces may be brushed, mirror polished, blasted or decorated in distinct directions. A technically shiny result is not necessarily faithful to the manufacturer’s original finishing.
Integrated-bracelet sports watches and vintage cases can show incorrect refinishing particularly clearly because their lines are central to the design.
When professional refinishing is accepted
Many modern owners value a clean appearance, and careful manufacturer or specialist refinishing can be reasonable during service. A lightly polished watch can still be authentic and desirable.
The important issue is disclosure and execution. Heavy work, altered proportions or inconsistent surfaces create a different assessment from a sympathetic refinish.
Sell as-is or polish first
Do not assume removing scratches will increase the offer by more than the cost or loss of originality. Buyers often prefer to choose whether and how refinishing occurs.
Send clear case-edge and lug photographs first. A direct buyer can assess the present condition without requiring cosmetic work before inspection.
