Inspection explained

What happens during a luxury watch inspection?

A physical inspection confirms whether the watch matches the online submission. It is more than a glance at the dial and helps complete a high-value purchase safely.

Confirming identity and configuration

The assessor checks the brand, reference, case material, size, dial, bezel, bracelet or strap, clasp and visible numbers against the claimed configuration.

Paperwork is compared with the watch but cannot authenticate it by itself. Mismatched accessories or service replacements are identified where possible.

Reviewing physical condition

Case shape, polishing, scratches, dents, crystal, crown, pushers, bracelet wear, clasp and seals are examined. Photographs may understate fine marks or hide damage at certain angles.

The inspection also considers whether refinishing or replaced parts affect originality and value.

Testing function and authenticity

Winding, setting, timekeeping and complications may be tested as appropriate. A movement examination or specialist authentication can be required for some watches.

Water resistance is not guaranteed by appearance and requires suitable testing. Sellers should not assume a watch remains water resistant because it once had a depth rating.

Completing the purchase

If the watch matches the submission, the team completes the ownership records, paperwork and payment. A material difference is explained and discussed before any change is made.

The seller can decide whether to continue. An online enquiry or inspection appointment does not itself transfer ownership.
